1. Who we are

SkateNow (“SkateNow”, “we”, “us”) runs skatenowkenya.com, where we share our skating sessions, pricing, events and shop, and how to reach us.

SkateNow is the data controller for the personal data described here, which means we decide how and why it is used. This policy explains that under Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019.

Questions or requests about your data: skatenow.sessions@gmail.com.

2. Information we collect

You can browse this website without giving us any personal information — there are no customer accounts. We only receive personal information when you choose to contact us:

  • Contact form: your name, email address, phone number (optional), the subject you pick and your message.
  • WhatsApp and phone: when you book a session, order from the shop or ask a question, you message or call us directly. We receive your phone number, your name if you share it, and whatever you tell us — for example your child’s name and age, the session or products you want, and where to meet or deliver.
  • Sessions: to coach safely and track progress we keep basic notes on each skater, such as name, age, skill level and progress. With your permission, we may also capture photos and videos during sessions (see section 5).
  • Payments: if we send you an invoice or you pay us, we keep the payment record. We never receive card details or mobile-money PINs.

This website itself only stores your shopping cart on your own device (see section 8). Nothing in the cart reaches us until you send it to us on WhatsApp.

3. Children’s data

Many of the skaters we coach are under 18. The Data Protection Act treats anyone under 18 as a child, and processing a child’s personal data requires the consent of a parent or guardian.

Bookings for children are made by a parent or guardian, and we use a child’s details only to run their sessions and keep them safe. A parent or guardian can ask us at any time to see, correct or delete them, or to remove a child’s photo from anything we have published.

4. How we use your information

  • to reply to your messages and questions;
  • to arrange, run and follow up on sessions, including tracking a skater’s progress;
  • to process and deliver shop orders;
  • to send invoices and keep payment records;
  • to keep this website and its admin area secure.

We rely on these legal bases: your consent; performing our agreement with you (sessions you book and items you order); our legitimate interests in running and securing our service; and complying with the law, for example keeping tax records.

We do not sell your personal data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not send marketing messages unless you have asked to receive them.

5. Photos and videos

We love sharing skating moments. Capturing highlights and videos during sessions is opt in — we only do it with the skater’s permission, or a parent’s or guardian’s for a child. At public events, photos and videos may be taken and shared on this website and our social media, as explained in our Terms & Conditions.

To have a photo or video of you or your child taken down, email skatenow.sessions@gmail.com or message us on WhatsApp.

6. Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers, who process data on our behalf and only on our instructions:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosts this website, stores contact-form messages and the photos we publish, and delivers our emails.
  • WhatsApp (Meta) carries the messages you choose to send us on WhatsApp. Those messages are also covered by WhatsApp’s own privacy policy.

This website also loads fonts from Google Fonts and some images from Unsplash, so your browser contacts their servers, which receive your IP address. They do not receive anything you type on this site. Our Instagram and TikTok links only contact those services if you click them.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, for example to comply with a court order. We do not share personal data with anyone else without your consent.

7. Where your data is stored

Information sent through this website is stored on AWS servers in the United States (Ohio). That is a transfer of personal data outside Kenya, which the Data Protection Act permits where appropriate safeguards are in place. We rely on AWS’s contractual commitments and security controls. The data is encrypted while stored, and travels between your browser and our servers only over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

8. Cookies and browser storage

We use only what the site needs to work. We use no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so there is nothing to opt in or out of.

  • Shopping cart (browser storage): remembers what you added to your cart, on your own device only, so it is still there if you come back. Clearing your browser data removes it.
  • Closed announcements (browser storage): if you close the event banner at the top of the page, your device remembers that so it stays closed. It contains nothing about you.
  • Admin sign-in cookie: used only by SkateNow staff who sign in to manage the website. Visitors never receive it.

If we ever add analytics or advertising tools, we will ask for your consent first and update this policy.

9. How long we keep it

  • Messages: as long as needed to respond to and deal with them.
  • Session notes and progress records: while the skater trains with us, and then until you ask us to delete them.
  • Orders, invoices and payments: as long as we need them for our records and any legal or tax obligations.
  • Photos and videos: until you ask us to take them down.

10. How we protect it

  • our database and file storage are encrypted at rest;
  • connections are encrypted with HTTPS throughout;
  • only authorised SkateNow staff can sign in to see messages, and their passwords are stored only as strong one-way hashes;
  • repeated password guessing on the staff sign-in is automatically blocked.

No system is completely secure. If a breach affects your personal data, we will notify the Data Protection Commissioner and, where required, you, as the law requires.

11. Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you have the right to:

  • be told how your personal data is used, which is what this policy does;
  • see the personal data we hold about you;
  • have inaccurate or misleading data corrected or deleted;
  • object to our use of your data;
  • receive a copy of your data in a portable format;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it.

Parents and guardians can exercise these rights for their children. To make a request, email skatenow.sessions@gmail.com or message us on WhatsApp, and tell us how we can confirm who you are.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.

12. Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when the way we handle data changes, and update the date at the top.
